Pablo Aimar will not leave Benfica, says Jorge Jesus

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus claims that Pablo Aimar will not be leaving the club in the January transfer window and also revealed that he would like to have Eduardo Salvio back if Atletico Madrid were willing to let him go.

Jorge Jesus, 57, has ruled out of the possibility of influential playmaker, Pablo Aimar, leaving Estadio da Luz this winter. The Argentina International has continued to remain a feature of the Reds’ side despite his ageing limbs and has been one of their star performers this term.

The 32-year-old has appeared nearly 19 times for Benfica this term and guided them to the knock-out rounds of the UEFA Champions League. His combination with the likes of Nicolas Gaitan and Axel Witsel has seen the Lisbon giants storm their way to the top of the Primeira Liga table, a position which they still retain.

Uruguayan outfit, Nacional and their Turkish counterparts, Besiktas, have been monitoring the progress of the talented attacker in recent months and have been seemingly impressed with his performances.

However, Jorge Jesus, has shed light on the matter and said that that former Real Zaragoza man will not be leaving Benfica this winter.

“I do not want to talk about a possible exit but I’m sure Aimar will not leave in January. There is no question that this can even happen. Many players who are close to contract termination find new professional challenges at the end of the year. This is only a question of time, and I will not comment on that possibility.”

The tactician also spoke about the chances of the Eagles acquiring Eduardo Salvio, who played for them on-loan last campaign.

Enzo Perez’s refusal to return to Portugal has left the club no choice and they are allegedly looking to press charges against him. As the player is unlikely to play for them ever again, Salvio has been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light and Jesus says he would have no problem working with the winger again.

“Salvio was a Benfica player temporarily. But he showed quality when he was with us. I believe he hasn’t played as much as he would have liked but that’s between him and Atletico Madrid. We’d like to have him back but I am satisfied with the quantity and quality of my current squad.”

With Pablo Aimar likely to stay at the helm, Benfica have a number of options in midfield but Eduardo Salvio’s addition could add in-depth quality to their ranks. Since the club are fighting for glory on several fronts, team rotation is a must and the 21-year-old could prove to be a superb acquisition.

However it remains what Atletico Madrid say on the potential transfer and whether they allow it to go through.
