The decision to send off Kompany has divided opinion with the defender and City boss Roberto Mancini both denying it was a red card offence.

However, Nani insists if he had not jumped out of the way of Kompany’s challenge he could have suffered serious injury.

“I jumped,” Nani is quoted as saying in the Daily Star on Sunday. “I jumped in that tackle. If I didn’t jump I might not be here to play. It was a very dangerous challenge. It was two feet.

“He didn’t touch me, it’s true – but sometimes you see very bad tackles on the legs and it’s just a yellow card. Or no card.

“That was the referee’s opinion and we have to respect that.”

Nani has been accused of being a diver, but the Portugal international has denied the claims and believes other players and fans are jealous of his skills

Nani added: “This is funny. I don’t know. The quality I have got makes people jealous. Of course the fans who say that are not Manchester United fans.

“They’re not the ones who like me. If I play against Spurs, Liverpool or Chelsea and someone gives me a tackle or pushes me I go down.

“But they will say he goes down easily. Yes, it’s not a foul. Of course, they will defend these players. That’s why they say I go down easily.

“But if you ask my team-mates, the people who work with me, they know me. They don’t say I go down easily.”

The Portuguese has had big boots to fill since the world record departure of his fellow international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and knows that his boss wants more out of him if he is to fill the void.

The 25-year-old has performed admirably since stepping up, scoring eight times this season alone, yet the former Sporting CP man still finds himself on the end of the hairdryer.

In an interview with Betfair Facebook he said: “I get it a lot, it’s normal.
“He expects more from me, so sometimes he comes to me and says something.”

Ferguson is famed for is man-management style and Nani appreciates everything he learns from the 70-year-old.

He continued: “No one understands it like Alex Ferguson. Everyone knows him in Portugal and talks a lot about him.

“Everyone knows the way he works is fantastic and the young lads improve a lot.”

Midfield maestro Paul Scholes made a surprise decision to come out of retirement six months after initially hanging up his boots and Nani rates him as one of the greatest players.

He added: “He is one of the best players I’ve played with in my life. The quality he gives the team is fantastic.”

Scholes made a scoring return in the previous fixture against Bolton and could be involved against Arsenal on Sunday, the first time the two have met since the Red Devils’ 8-2 win at Old Trafford back in August.

And Michael Carrick believes that revenge may be on the minds of the Gunners and that it will be a “massive game”.

He said: “They didn’t start the season too well but they are still up there.

“Arsenal against Manchester United is always a massive game. They will want to win and so will we.”

The race for the title could be blown wide open on Sunday as Manchester City take on Tottenham before United face the Gunners.

As both the Blues and Spurs are in the mix for the title along with United, Sunday could prove vital in who eventually holds the Premier League aloft come May.

Carrick added: “Manchester City have done well.

“You have to give them credit. They set an early pace, had a funny Christmas period, and have now bounced back.

“It’s close at the moment, so we want to catch up with them. The bar has been raised this year.”

United travel to Newcastle on Wednesday night aiming to bounce back from their shock 3-2 defeat to Blackburn on New Year’s Eve.

The surprise loss to Steve Kean’s men prevented the Red Devils from starting 2012 as league leaders and Nani insists he and his team-mates must learn their lesson if they want to keep the pressure on rivals Manchester City.

He told the Daily Star: “If we want to fight for the Premier League title it’s impossible to repeat a defeat like the one against Blackburn.

“Things like that could decide the title at the end of the season. It was a negative day.

“But I think it represents a lesson for us and now we must not fail. It left a bitter taste in the dressing room.

“But now we have to bounce back against Newcastle. It won’t be easy but we are the champions and this squad is always out to win.

Second-placed United will once again be playing catch-up when they travel to the North East on Wednesday night after Man City opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table with victory over Liverpool on Tuesday.

But Nani remains confident that the Red Devils have the quality to overhaul their city rivals come the end of the season.

“If we were to go top of the league it would be a big blow to City because many people wrote us off after the 6-1 at Old Trafford,” he added.

“United have enough pride to still go on and win the league – we cannot afford to fail.”
